Be Bushfire Ready: Prepare Your Emergency Kit Today
Living in a bushfire-prone area means being prepared well in advance. According to the Country Fire Authority (CFA), having an emergency kit ready is a crucial part of your bushfire survival plan. This kit should contain essential items to help you and your family stay safe and comfortable if you need to evacuate quickly.
What to Include in Your Bushfire Emergency Kit
1. Overnight Bag
Pack a small bag with a change of clothes, essential toiletries, and personal hygiene items. If you need to leave in a hurry, you’ll have everything necessary for the first night away from home.
2. Medicines and First Aid Kit
Include prescription medications, pain relievers, bandages, antiseptic creams, and other essential medical supplies. If you have specific medical conditions, ensure you have enough medication to last several days.
3. Important Documents and Valuables
Gather key documents such as your passport, will, insurance papers, and property deeds. Store them in a waterproof bag. Include sentimental items like family photos and jewellery that you don’t want to lose.
4. Mobile Phone and Charger
Your phone is your lifeline in an emergency. Keep it fully charged and pack a portable charger or power bank to ensure you stay connected.
5. Water Supply
Pack enough drinking water for each family member, with at least 2–3 litres per person per day. Staying hydrated is crucial, especially in extreme heat conditions.
6. Wool Blankets / Fire Blankets
Wool blankets are naturally flame-resistant and can provide warmth if you are forced to evacuate. They also help protect against radiant heat in an emergency.
7. Contact Information
Have a written list of emergency contacts, including your doctor, local council, and power company. If mobile networks go down, you’ll still have access to crucial numbers.
8. Additional Masks
Bushfire smoke can severely impact air quality. Pack P2 or N95 masks to protect yourself from inhaling harmful particles.
9. Hand Sanitiser and Antibacterial Wipes
These items will help maintain hygiene when clean water is scarce, reducing the risk of infections and illness.
Store Your Kit in an Accessible Location
According to the CFA, your emergency kit should be kept in an easy-to-reach location, preferably near an exit. Make sure all household members know where it is so they can grab it quickly if evacuation becomes necessary.
By preparing your emergency kit today, you can ensure your family’s safety and peace of mind in the event of a bushfire. Stay safe and be ready!
